How long does a non-citizen have to be married to a US citizen to get permanent residency?

Also, how long do they have to be married in order to to receive work authorization (eastern region of the US)?

What questions does one encounter at an immigration office interview when acquiring permanent residency and what serves as evidence for true marriages (shared savings accounts, shared tenancy)?

Please, only answer if you are somewhat competent enough.

Thanks! How long does a non-citizen have to be married to a US citizen to get permanent residency?
FIrst, assuming that the correct paperwork was filed to begin with (fiance visa, etc) it would be 3 years of marriage.

If it's a marriage without the proper paperwork, application, etc you are never legally a US citizen because you didnt go through the proper channels.

Work authorization is almost immediate. After approval of fiance visa and then marriage, a green card is almost automatic (of course more paperwork).

Questions cover a wide variety and are far to many in number to list, but they will be questions similar to the old newlywed game. Note: Just like the game, you will be questioned seperately and your answers compared.

What did you have for dinner yesterday?

What is his/her favorite color/food/holiday, etc.

How often do you make love? When was the last time?

What is his/her birthday?

What color is your bedroom?

In short, the questions will be to determine if you are living together, and how well you know your spouse. Or just married on paper and not sharing anything.

If you fail, they can declare it not to be a true marriage and criminal charges for you can follow, as well as deportation for the spouse. How long does a non-citizen have to be married to a US citizen to get permanent residency?
1. you have to be married for at least two years. within the first year of the application you will receive a temporary Residence card, at the expiration of that card you will receive a permanent card. For work authorization after the application is filed you most likely have to wait 6 months or less to get your work authorization and consecuently your SS card.

2. Immigration officer may ask you the following questions:

what color is the toothbrush your wife or husband use?

on what side of the bed you sleep?

what is her/his favorite color?

He may ask you this type of questions, always depend on how you demostrate your relationship.( with pictures, if you have a baby, or you are expecting, properties under both names, if you file you income tax together, etc).

I hope this answer your question.
I believe it is a year but you need to check with immigration. I know that you have to be able to prove that you are living together as man and wife. If any children are born they are automatically citizens.
