Can a single mother with 2 children claim married with allowances on w-4 and head of household on her taxes?

If so, will this result in more money on her paycheck? The allowances she is doing now is single/10. If she claims married - how many allowance does she need to claim on the W-4?Can a single mother with 2 children claim married with allowances on w-4 and head of household on her taxes?
Don't claim married, you can claim whatever number you want it'll reduce what gets taken out, just reduces what you get back at the end of the year. Claiming 10 your probably about at the cap of the amount taken out already, social security doesn't change regardless of what you change. Married just means there's someone else that can potentially claim 1/2 of your dependents, so it wouldn't increase what you get on your check. You don't want to risk being audited either, so you should leave things how they are, if you do get autided they will require you to claim your actual amount for 5 years which means way less on your check. Can a single mother with 2 children claim married with allowances on w-4 and head of household on her taxes?
By doing this you could end up owing the IRS instead of just increasing your paycheck.

I'm a single mother and claim 3 on W4 with head of household on taxes. I get money back, and I prefer that over paying them when I don't have the money this time of year.

You need to consult with your HR director or a tax person for the whole scoop.
A single mother of 2 children probably won't owe any tax unless she has a pretty high income. If she isn't going to owe any tax, she can claim whatever she wants to on her W-4 without penalty.

But if she still has income tax coming out and her current W4 says single with 10 allowances, she must have a high income so needs to be careful.
No, of course not. You can only claim ';married'; if you ARE married.
It is not illegal to claim a different withholding amount on your w4. You do have to claim exactly as you are on the tax return. If you claim married and 2 you will still get money back a the end of the year if you claim head of household and 2 dependents on the tax return. From what you described, you would qualify for head of household. Be sure to file your 2007 taxes so you can get the stimulas refund.
If your not married, why would you think you could?
