How could two business owners get married & protect their respective businesses?

My boyfriend and I are talking about getting married. We both own businesses and are afraid that if we get married, and something were to happen at one of our businesses, if we were to get sued we could lose them both. We live in CA which is a 50/50 state- is there anything we can do to protect our assets going into the marriage? How could two business owners get married %26amp; protect their respective businesses?
You both should sit down with a lawyer. It's a good idea to pay for the consultation to make sure you are both protected. I would think it depends on how the companies are set up (i.e. sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, LLC, etc.) but it's definitely better to find out now and make arrangements if needed.

Good luck. How could two business owners get married %26amp; protect their respective businesses?
Why would something happen just because you got married? Your names are not both on both companies.
