What do you do to become legally married?

Okay, this may sound silly, but what exactly do you do to legally become married?...My fiance and I have been talking and we aren't totally sure about what to do/where to start. I know I've seen some couples at the courthouse getting a license, but what necessary steps do you take? We aren't having a huge wedding or anything, but in a legal sense, what do you do exactly to be legally married? What do you do to become legally married?
Just the license and someone recognized by your jurisdiction as being able to perform a marriage, to perform a marriage ceremony with 2 witnesses. What do you do to become legally married?
You go to city or town hall and get a marriage license (you have to go together in person). Bring ID. Also it cost money (varies by town/state). In my town it is 10 dollars but in other places it could be 20 or a little higher.

Then you can go to a church and book a day for them to marry you (cost money) or ask the town/city clerk about finding a justice of the peace (many town clerks can do it) and you pay them to marry you. The marriage license can take a few days to get so make sure you apply for it about 2 weeks before you plan on marrying.

So you need a marriage license (which says who you both are and who your parents are and your addresses and what your new names will be, mans name is usually the same after).

And you need 2 witnesses and a minister, priest, rabbi, or justice of the peace, or judge to marry you in your state. If you live in 1 state but want to get married in another state you must get the marriage license IN the state you plan to marry.
both of you go to your county courthouse and ask for a marriage license. Make sure you have your ids. they'll ask a few simple questions then you both will sign and they will give you the license. then depending on your state law you will have to wait x amount of days before you can have the ceremony of your choice where your pastor, justice of the peace or officiant will sign as well.

The license will be mailed of by the officiant and signed by higher officials, then mailed back to you. Congrats..you're now married and can change your social security card and drivers license.
Look up your state's Department of Public Health website and it will have instructions. Here is California's as an example http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/birthdeat鈥?/a> Congrats!
